We take candle safety extremely seriously here at Sachii, and believe that these handy tips will help you stay safe while enjoying our hand-crafted scented candles at home, your office, your bach.

Before lighting your candle for the first time we recommend reading through the following information. As always, if you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Our Candle Burning Top Tips

  • For optimal burning, trim your wick to 3mm before each lighting to avoid smoking and overheating.

  • Always protect the surface on which the candle sits.

  • The first burn of any candle should be long enough for the entire top layer of wax to liquefy. This will ensure an even burn for each light. We recommend at least 2 hours.

  • Refrain from burning candles longer than 3 hours at a time (for candles under 450g) and 4 hours (for candles over 450gm), and never burn a candle when there is less than 1cm of wax at the base.

  • Never leave a candle burning unattended or within reach of drafts, pets, or small children.

  • Once the candle is lit, never touch or move it. It is dangerous to pickup the candle while it is still burning or while the liquid wax is hot.

  • The candle jar will be hot after burning, so allow the wax to cool completely before handling.

  • Once the flame is extinguished make sure the wick is upright and centred.

  • Extinguish the flame carefully by snuffing it rather than blowing on it.

To make the most of your Sachii candle, there are steps you can take for a smooth melt and less wasted wax. Use this guide for candle-burning best practices so you can get a few more sniffs out of your new favourite scent.

Strategically Time the First Burn

Scented candles are not only great for evoking memories but did you know that candle wax actually has a memory of its own? Wax learns to melt the same way, so the first time you light your candle’s wick, it’s important to burn it until the liquified wax creates a layer all the way around the inside of the vessel. We recommend burning your candle for 3 hours initially to ensure that you don’t get tunnelling on the second burn.

Stop Candle Tunnelling in Its Tracks

Were you naughty and didn’t do a strategic first burn? Is your candle now suffering from tunnelling? One way to remedy candle tunnelling is with tin foil. Secure a piece around the top of your candle, leaving an opening at the centre above the wick. Then, light your candle and allow it to burn for a half-hour or so. When you unwrap the foil, your candle should be good as new.

Tunneling can leave you with a lot of wasted wax, so fixing the problem as soon as you see it is the best way to ensure an efficient burn.

Trim Your Wick for a Steady Flame

To help maintain a quality flame throughout your candle’s lifespan, you’ll want to trim the wick routinely. Bent or too-long wicks can result in uneven melting or a flickering flame, but with regular trimming, your candle will burn with a steady glow.

Burn Time

To minimise any damage or issues, we recommend only burning your candle for 3 hours at a time (for candles under 450g) and 4 hours (for candles over 450gm). Also, keep an eye on your candle the whole time that it is burning. Once your candle has got to 1cm, it is time to stop burning it. However, you can always buy another one of our luxury Sachii candles to enjoy for another 40 - 60 hours.
